2004 MEETING MINUTES

February 12, 2004

The regular monthly meeting was called to order by President Sam Pardee at 7:10 pm.
29 members were present. Harry Warner, our newest member, was introduced. 

The business meeting was suspended for tonight's guest speaker. John Castle introduced Julie Carr, who presented an interesting talk on "Alternatives to Death Records".

The meeting was resumed after a coffee break with the 50/50 drawing. Lorraine Larkins won $22.50. 

Approval of Minutes: Tammy Parsons made a motion to accept the January minutes as presented by recording secretary, Alice Raatz. Greg James seconded. Carried. 


Officer's reports: 
Sam Pardee, MGC delegate, reports the following from today's MCG Executive board meeting. 
Sam and the bylaws committee are busy working on MGC's bylaws. 
October is Family History Month at the State Library. MGC will have a workshop on October 16. JoAnn Harvey will arrange speakers. 
There is a National push to designate March as Irish American Heritage Month.  Seven states have agreed to this.
An Associate Membership is being considered for groups who's primary interest may not be genealogy such as the Historical Societies. An annual fee of $10 is suggested. 
MGC is planning to purchase 616 microfilm reels of Michigan vital records (birth, death and marriage) from the state for about $15,000. 

Vice President, David Held has 4 months of general membership meetings open for guest speakers. At tonight's meeting Carol Callard agreed to speak at the March meeting to fill an opening. Topic will be announced later. 

Treasurer, Marge James announced that she has provided a donation container which will be passed at each meeting to collect money for the microfilm reader printer fund. 

Membership Secretary, Jean Crawford, reports that we have 3 new members in January, which brings the total membership to 111. 
Also, anyone who is interested purchasing an ICGS T-shirt or sweatshirt, please contact Jean. 

Trustee, Lorraine Larkins, reports that she and Norma will audit the treasurer's books in March while Marge is on vacation. 

Librarian, Isabelle Wells reports that yesterday Jackson County Genealogical Society members picked up the unused old microfilm reader that she has had taking up space in her home for a long time. 
Volunteers are needed on the obit projects, which consists of cutting obits from the newspaper and pasting into a book. 

Computer chairman: Greg James states that the computer is working fine.
Earlier in the week the ICGS email was not working, but after Greg contacted the webmaster they have it back up and running.   Work is underway to complete the CD of Wheatfield records to have ready for the Eaton Co workshop in April. 

Newsletter chairperson, Barb Smith will have a newsletter out in April. 

Announcements: 
Eaton Co Workshop is April 17th. ICGS will have a booth at this workshop.
Also, on April 17th there is another workshop in Kalamazoo. 
Monroe Society will have a seminar on April 3rd. 

Sam reports that volunteers are needed for research requests which come to our society from time to time. 

New Business: 
Sam reports that John Castle will send a letter of request for $6,000 to Abrams foundation for the 2005 township records microfilming projects.

Carol Callard mentioned that nominations are needed for candidates to be the recipient of the Lucy Mary Kellogg award which will be presented in October 2004.  Application forms are available through MGC. 

The 10th Anniversary of ICGS will be in 2005.  It's time to start planning.  Suggestions are needed.  Bring your ideas to next months meeting.  A power point presentation of the 10 year history of ICGS was suggested. 

Isabelle Wells made a motion to adjourn.  Sam Pardee adjourned the meeting at 9:00 p.m.

January 8, 2004

The regular monthly meeting was called to order by President Sam Pardee at 7:10 pm.
23 members and guests were present. Guest was Roberta Steward, fiancée of David Held. 

Officer's reports: 
MGC Delegate, Sam Pardee, reports the following from today's MGC Meeting. 

Federated Genealogical Society would like MGC to join them in a National seminar or to co-host with Allen County in 2007. Volunteers will be needed from each society. Attendance is expected to be several thousand people. 

Family History month will be celebrated at the State of Michigan library in October. 

Western Michigan genealogical society will celebrate their 50th anniversary also in October. 

Winner of the Lucy Mary Kellogg award was Mary Lou Duncan.

Membership Secretary, Jean Crawford, reports that we have 107 memberships. 

Librarian, Isabelle Wells reports that the reference room is getting busy following the holidays.  Volunteers are needed.  Isabelle brought many unidentified family photos from Norma Harkness in hopes someone might know the identities of some.  New books are available at the reference room on Williamston and East Lansing.

Committee Reports:
Computer chairman: Greg James states that the computer is working fine.  Greg received a list of 2004 special rates for genealogists who visit the Holiday Inn in Salt Lake City Utah. 

Publicity Chairman: John Castle noted that the financial report reflects the sale of a set of Vevay township microfilm records to Allen County library for $560.  $400 was recorded to grant fund and $160 profit to general fund. 

175 reels in storage were billed at the lower rate of $1.25 per reel instead of the quoted $2 per reel. 

A letter of appreciation was received from Vevay township for our work on microfilming. 

Approval of Minutes: Tammy Parsons made a motion to accept the November minutes as presented by recording secretary Alice Raatz.  Lynne Castle seconded.  Carried. 

50/50 drawing was held following the coffee break.  Sam Pardee won $16.50 which he donated to the microfilm project. 

During the roundtable discussion, David Held presented some useful information on "Computer searches on line and off" and other members discussed their research. 

New Business: Executive Board will meet Tuesday, January 27 at 7 p.m. at the Castle Residence. 

John Castle made a motion to adjourn. Sam Pardee adjourned the meeting at 8:50 p.m.
