There was no business meeting.    No minutes taken.    This was the annual Christmas Potluck Dinner.

November 14, 2002

The regular monthly meeting was called to order by President Sam Pardee at 7:00 pm, 38 members and guests were present. Guests were Randy Riley, Louella Eaton, Art Ford, Leah Wheat, & B.J. Ford. Newest member, Rosalie Parmilee was introduced. Meeting was suspended at 7:05 to present tonight's program. Sam Pardee introduced Randy Riley from the State of Michigan Library who gave a very interesting talk and slide show on the genealogical holdings at the state library.

Meeting reconvened at 8:25 p.m. following the coffee break. Mary Eshelby conducted the 50/50 drawing. Tonight's winner was Lorraine Larkin, who won $22.

Sam Pardee reports that the MGC meeting today which was mainly focused on the 30th anniversary celebration of the council, with little business happenings. JoAnn Harvey reported at MGC that the bill to open death records at 100 years, instead of 110 years, failed to pass before the House and Senate ended their sessions for the year, but will be reintroduced in 2003.

Greg James made a motion to accept the October meeting minutes as presented by recording secretary, Alice Raatz. Bruce Bevier seconded. Approved.

Treasurer, Marge James, reports that the treasurer's report for this month included a budget report for 2002-03 on the back side of the paper.

Membership secretary, Jean Crawford, reports that many memberships have been renewed for the upcoming year, 22 remain unpaid. 3 new members have joined in the past month.

Librarian, Isabelle Wells, reports a recent visitor to the reference room is searching for an old military friend named Gregory Harrison who lived in Mason about 1941. Anyone with information, please contact Isabelle.
About 200 more Spartan labels are needed by December 31, which will be the last of the participation in this project.
Reference room will be closed, Saturday, November 30th, Christmas Eve-December 24th and New Years Eve-December 31st.
Isabelle also thanked John & Lynne Castle, Jean Crawford, Joyce Darrow, Betty Jean Dean, Bonnie Harkness, Andrea Miller, Nola Olson, Sam Pardee, Barbara Lyon-Smith, Eldora Spooner, Valdeen Warren and Joyce Yeutter for volunteering at the reference room.

Computer, Greg James, reports that the computer had minor problem which he promptly fixed.

Newsletter, Barb Smith, reports the newsletter will be ready for January. Barbara requests that members submit family trees or histories to be included in the newsletter.

Social, Barb Smith, reports that she has several volunteers to help with the Christmas Potluck. Barb questioned whether we will have a meat provided or just potluck. Sam confirmed that potluck would be fine. Lynne Castle requested a small amount of money be allotted to purchase a number of small centerpieces for each table, which could be raffled at the end of the evening. Lynn suggested we eliminate the gift auction/exchange this year. After discussion, a vote by show of hands agreed to eliminate the gifts. Barb Smith suggests each person bring a canned good donation for a local food bank.

October 10, 2002

The regular monthly meeting was called to order by President John Castle at 7:00 pm, 38 members and guests were present.  Guests were Pat Corrigan, Carol Callard, Larry Collar, Willard Burdick and Janelle Lawless.  Meeting was suspended at 7:05 to present tonight's program. John Castle introduced Janelle Lawless, Ingham County Probate Court Registrar, who talked on Probate records.

Meeting reconvened at 8:20 pm following the coffee break.  Cliff Eshelby conducted the 50/50 drawing.  Tonight's winner was Tammy Parsons, who donated her winnings of $19 to the microfilm fund.

Joyce Darrow made a motion to accept the September meeting minutes as presented by recording secretary, Alice Raatz.  Julie Carr seconded.  Approved.

Joyce Darrow conducted an induction ceremony of the new officers for the year 2002-2003.  Following is the list of officers.

Following the induction, outgoing President, John Castle presented the gavel to incoming President, Sam Pardee, who conducted the remainder of tonight's meeting.

Treasurer, Marge James, reports that she has limited copies of this month's treasurer's report.  If anyone wishes to review the report, see Marge.

Membership secretary, Jean Crawford, reports that many memberships have been renewed for the upcoming year.  2 new members have joined in the past month.
Merchandise for sale at tonight's meeting are ICGS tote bags, Ingham County photos, CD's of Funeral home records and Locke township microfilm.

Trustee Gloria Young reports that she and Norma Hass have audited the ICGS books as prepared by treasurer, Marge James. All transactions are complete and accurate.  A written report was presented.  Also, a budget for the upcoming year has been prepared.

Librarian, Isabelle Wells, reports that Mary Eshelby donated a scrap book of Ingham County events.  Isabelle also noted that attendance at the research room has been busy, volunteers always needed.  CD's are available to check out for a month, see Isabelle.

Computer, Greg James, reports that the computer continues to function well and the web page is still there.

Newsletter, Barb Smith, reports that the fall newsletter has been mailed out.  Barbara suggested that as a society project we might consider indexing other societies newsletters which contain large numbers of surnames.  Carol Callard states that indexing of periodicals and newsletters is currently being done by other societies.  Office Max now has new copiers, which required upgrading the copy paper to 30# at an increased cost to us for our newsletter.  Barb suggested we reduce our newsletter from 10 pages to 8 to keep our mailing costs from rising.  Tammy Parsons suggested changing from Office Max to Paper Image Printing, which she found to be less expensive for her MGC newsletter.
Barbara requests that members submit family trees or histories to be included in the newsletter.

Sam Pardee, MGC delegate, reports that the book on the History of Military in Michigan may be ordered through your society.  Cost is $32 and order forms are available from Isabelle Wells.

Isabelle Wells announced that Eaton Co Genealogical Society will have a bus trip to the library in Ft. Wayne on Saturday, October 19. Cost is $45.
Michigan History month is October. Archives, Library and Museum will extend hours every Wednesday until 8 p.m.

Lynn Castle reported that White Oak Township records have been microfilmed with enough 2002 grant money left over to film the Alaiedon records.  Wheatfield records will be the first microfilm project from 2003 grant funds.

September 12, 2002

The regular monthly meeting was called to order by President John Castle at 7:00 pm, 40 members and guests were present.  Meeting was suspended at 7:05 to present tonight's program.  Sam Pardee introduced Shirley Hodges who gave a talk on church records

Meeting reconvened at 8:20 pm following the coffee break. Julie Carr conducted the 50/50 drawing.  Tonight's winner was Greg James, who donated his winnings of $21 to the society.

Greg James noted an error in the August minutes.  In the Vice President's report the Abrams grant money should have been $30,000, not $30,0000.  Greg James made a motion to accept the August minutes, with correction as noted.  Tammy Parsons seconded. Approved

No additional nominations were received from the floor.  Bill Atkinson made a motion to accept the slate of officers as presented.  Joyce Darrow seconded. Motion carried.

Vice President, Sam Pardee reports that the MGC will sponsor a workshop for all Michigan society members on Oct 19th. Topic will be "How to Create a User Friendly Society and Keep The Members Coming Back"

The following events are on the agenda for Eaton Co Genealogical Society:    
  Regular meeting is Sept.18, 2002 at the courthouse in Charlotte. Speaker, Jim Miller, will present a program entitled, "I close my eyes and  fantasize".
    Bus trip to Allen Co Library in Ft. Wayne, Indiana on Saturday, October 19th. 
    Shirley Hodges will speak on "Women's Genealogy" and "Tiptoe through the Tombstones" on Sat. Sept. 14th at the Charlotte library. 
    Turkeyville dinner and the show "South Pacific" will be on Sat. Oct 26th. Group tickets available for $31 per person.
    Mid Michigan Genealogical Society will host a dinner meeting on November 12, 2002, at Plymouth Congregational church featuring speaker, John Colletta. $17 to attend the dinner, no charge without the dinner.

Sam reports the following classes that he will be conducting:
    Sept. 28, 2002 Lansing City Library "Introduction to genealogy".
    First Monday Oct Haslett branch Library.
    November 19, 2002 Holt-Delhi Library.
Governor Engler has designated October as "Family History Month" The State of Michigan Library, Museum, and Archives will remain open every Wednesday evening until 8 p.m. during the entire month.

Tammy Parsons reports many meeting will be held during October in connection with Family History Month. Information about topics, dates and times may be found on www.libofmich.lib.mi.us

Jean Crawford reports that annual membership dues are due by September 30th.  Costs are $10 for individual or $15 for family.

Librarian, Isabelle Wells reports that volunteers are always needed for the reference room.  A sign up sheet will be passed.
Spartan Labels donations are coming in.  We will end this project in December 2002.

John Castle reports that he received a call from our member, Lorraine Larkin, who is seriously ill and currently undergoing Chemotherapy.

Old Business: Trustees will audit the books in October and work on the 2002-2003 budget.
New Business: New President, Sam Pardee, will call for an executive board meeting in October.
Computer, Greg James, reports the computer has been working fine. Our web page has been renewed for another year.

Historian, Alice Raatz, reports the current History book (Volume 3), containing all society events from January 2001 to current date, is up to date and available at tonight's meeting for browsing.

Newsletter, Barbara Smith, reports that the newsletter will be ready for mailing after tonight's meeting. Completion was delayed to include the new slate of officers for the upcoming year.

Tammy Parsons, MCG delegate reports that Senate Bill 794 passed, allowing birth records to be public at 100 years instead of 110 years.

Next society meeting will be the second Thursday in October.  Guest speaker will be Janelle Lawless.

August 8, 2002

The regular monthly meeting was called to order by President John Castle at 7:10 pm, 25 members and guests were present. Guest were Paul Young, spouse of Gloria, and Janette Thayer. Our founder and eldest member, Ed Parker was in attendance at tonight's meeting.

Eldora Spooner made motion to accept the June minutes as presented by secretary, Alice Raatz. Bart Smith seconded. Approved. No minutes from July as it was the annual picnic.

Vice President, Sam Pardee reports that although he did not attend today's MGC board meeting, Tammy Parsons reported to him that the library received a $30,0000 grant from Abrams foundation for the death records project (GENDIS).

Sam also reports that he will be conducting a genealogical presentation on September 28, 2002 at the Lansing Public Library. Also, at the Haslett Library in early October.

Sam would appreciate any suggestion for October, perhaps something relating to the Family History Month as designated by Governor Engler.

Jean Crawford reports that current members are 113. Annual membership dues are due by September 30th. Costs are $10 for individual or $15 for family.

Librarian, Isabelle Wells reports that she has received all 3 discs of the 1930 census. Also, the 1930 Ingham plat book is available to help determine boundary lines.
Microfilm reels of Dansville, Ingham Township and Onondaga township are now in the reference room. Indexes of these films were brought to tonight's meeting. Workers are needed for the reference room at the Mason Library. A sign up sheet will be passed.

Old Business: Jean Crawford and Lynne Castle, nominating committee, reported that the slate of officers is nearly complete. A vice president candidate is needed. The responsibilities of VP are to fill in as President when needed, arrange monthly guest speakers, attend board meetings and hopefully be a prospective candidate to move up to the Presidency.

John Castle reports he received a letter from the law firm representing the Abrams Foundation stating that our society has been approved for an $8,000.00 grant to continue microfilming records in 2003.

New Business
Greg James, computer, reports that the ICGS web host's annual fee of $107.40 is due for renewal. Isabelle Wells made a motion to renew our web page for the $107.40 yearly fee. Lynn Brown Seconded. Approved.

John Castle requests that all bills be turned in to Marge James for payment by mid September.

Computer, Greg James, reports that Isabelle Wells purchased a cleaning device for the reference room laser printer, which has eliminated the hazy printing problem.

Social, Barb Smith reports that all is fine. The donation of cookies for each monthly meeting has been more than adequate. Barbara volunteered to be social for 3 months, which was 4 months ago, anyone willing to volunteer would be appreciated.

Historian, Alice Raatz, reports the history book is up to date and includes photos of the July picnic. The book is available at tonight's meeting for all to browse.

MCG Delegate, Tammy Parsons, reports that other than what Sam previously reported, today's board meeting did not have anything else to report. Parking at the state library is improving, but continues to be a problem.

Next meeting will be September 12, 2002. The program will be the nomination of officers and guest speaker, Shirley Hodges.

Isabelle Wells requests that all Spartan Labels be turned in, as we will discontinue this program in December 2002, due to the lack of Spartan stores in the area.

Lynn Brown questioned the status of the reference room in the library. Barb Smith reports that the most recent plans are to include the second floor in the remodeling.

Following the business meeting, a 50/50 drawing and a workshop were held. Gloria Young won $20.50 in the 50/50. Workshop was held for all members to assist in clipping newspaper obituaries and indexing books.

June 13, 2002

The regular monthly meeting was called to order by President John Castle at 7:05 pm, 29 members and guests were present. Guest was Jessica Parsons, daughter of Tammy Parsons.

Jan Shepler made motion to accept the May minutes as presented by secretary, Alice Raatz. Eldora Spooner seconded. Approved. President Castle reports that the minutes for May have been corrected by Alice Raatz, and copy was sent to him.

Vice President, Sam Pardee reports that he will be conducting a 2 hour Beginning Genealogy class at the downtown branch of the City of Lansing Library on September 28, 2002. Williamston and Haslett libraries have also requested a Beginning Genealogy class.

Treasurer, Marge James requested that all ICGS officers meet briefly at the end of tonight's regular meeting to discuss a budget issue.

Jean Crawford reports that the ICGS T-shirts and Sweatshirts orders have arrived and have been distributed to all who ordered.
The vendors table at the Eaton county workshop resulted in $92.50 sales, mostly due to the sales of our CD's.

Librarian, Isabelle Wells reports that she has not received the 1930 census she ordered, but it is available at the Library of Michigan in Lansing for researching. CD's and audio tapes are available on loan, see Isabelle following the meeting to check out.
Workers are needed for the reference room at the Mason Library. Hours are: Tuesdays 12 noon to 4 p.m. and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Two people will work each shift, so that a new volunteer will have an experienced worker to assist them. A sign up sheet will be passed.

Old Business: At the May 30th Executive Board meeting, John appointed Jean Crawford and Lynne Castle to the nominating committee. Many current officers are willing to serve in the coming year.

New Business: Executive Board approved John's request to submit a letter of application for $8,000 grant money from Abrams Foundation for 2003. A response should be received by August 2002.
6 Microfilm reels of Onondaga Township records have been completed by VueCom and returned to John last Friday.

Next Monday, Ingham Township records will be taken to VueCom to begin microfilming. Volunteers are needed to extract data from records, see John after the meeting. Onondaga Township records microfilming project is complete, and they were not interested in having records returned. At the township clerks request, John wrote to Dave Johnson at the State Archives to question if they are interested in adding them to their collection. If not, our society will request keeping them on loan for our research use.

Computer, Greg James reports the computer and printer are both working fine.

Social, Barb Smith
John reported on behalf of Barb, July meeting will be the annual potluck picnic at 6 p.m. Bring your own table service and a dish to pass. Beverages will be provided.

Historian, Alice Raatz reports the history book is up to date and available at each meeting for anyone to browse through.

Nominating Committee, Jean Crawford reports that a candidate for Vice President is needed. A discussion regarding the duties of the officers was held. Members questioning these duties should refer to the copy of the bylaws, which each member received with their membership.

Newsletter, Barb Smith reports that the newsletter is ready to pick up on the back table.

Joyce Darrow made a motion to adjourn. Jean Crawford seconded. Approved.

Following the business meeting, Sam Pardee led a discussion on "Sources".

May 9, 2002

The regular monthly meeting was called to order by President John Castle at 7:00 pm, 26 members and guests were present. Guests were Lisa Grill (new member tonight) and Clyde Chamberlain.

The meeting was suspended so the evening's program could be presented. John Castle introduced Clyde Chamberlain, who presented a very interesting, unusual and amusing narrated slide presentation on "Cemeteries and Tombstones."

After a 10 minute coffee break, John Castle reconvened the meeting. Sally Landreville conducted the 50/50 drawing. John Castle won $17, which he donated to the society. A second drawing, for a small gift, of a wall hanging, was won by Marge Dickinson. The wall hanging was donated by Barb Smith, who suggested that at each month's meeting, member's donate items to be given away in a drawing following the 50/50 drawing.

Secretary, Alice Raatz, reported that the April minutes incorrectly show the guest speakers as Clyde Chamberlain in June (should be May) and Randy Riley in July (should be June). Eldora Spooner made motion to accept the April minutes with corrections to be done as presented by secretary, Alice Raatz. Mary Eshelby seconded. Approved.

Announcement by John Castle, At the request of Eldora Spooner, Next Tuesday, John will go to Wheatfield township to request old records for our society microfilming project.

Treasurer, Marge James was on vacation. Greg James, reported the treasurer report was available on the back table.

Membership Secretary, Jean Crawford, reports that 3 new members have joined our society. Current membership is 108. Joyce Yeutter and Jean worked a vendor table at the Livingston Co. seminar. $36 in merchandise was sold. ICGS T-shirts and sweatshirts have been ordered and should be here by the June meeting.

Gloria Young, trustee, reported that she and Norma Hass conducted an audit of the treasurers book. All records are accurate and well maintained.

Librarian, Isabelle Wells informed us that the vast amount of donated items from Donna Hemminger have now been sorted, catalogued and on the shelves at the reference room. Many items, including a CD of the index to the Ball Dunn Funeral Home records were brought to tonight's meeting and are available for loan. See Isabelle to check them out until next month's meeting. Library reference room will be closed on Saturday May 25th, as Isabelle will be out of town. Volunteers always needed to work reference room, both Tuesdays and Saturdays.
1930 Ingham county census has been ordered and should arrive in 6-8 weeks.

Announcements: Eaton County Workshop will be held June 1, 2002 in Charlotte. Jean Crawford will work a vendor's table. Next Executive board meeting will Thursday, May 30th at the Castle's residence.

New Business: $8,000 Abram's grant money has been received. This is given to our society for the purpose of preserving records. Vevay Picnic pavilion has been reserved for 6:30 pm, July 11, 2002 for our annual picnic. Discussion and confusion about the date followed as it was in June in past years. Corrections will be made to announcements that have been sent with incorrect month.

Nominating committee will be needed by June 1st. Volunteers are needed. Contact John.

Greg James, reports that the computer continues to be working very well. Greg is proofing the Vevay Township Burial Transfer certificates in preparation for computer entry.

Barb Smith, Social committee expressed a need for a volunteer to bring cookies to the monthly meetings. A sign up sheet will be passed.

Barbara Lyon Smith, Newsletter reports that she is working on the next edition, which will be available by our June meeting. Barbara suggests that members send queries to be included.

Tammy Parsons, MGC delegate, reports on today's meeting. . Gendis Death Records has a new web address. www.michigan.gov/mdch Gendis data entry has been completed through mid year 1886, currently on hold for additional grant money. Carol Canard, SOM library reports new records are: French Canadian marriage indexes, more Ontario vital records, and indexes some states 1910 Federal Census in book form. If you paid $27 for copy of a Social Security records applications and did not receive a copy of the original application, please contact JoAnn Harvey. Tammy has email address if anyone needs it. Senate Bill 794 to make birth records available at 100 years, instead of 110 has gone through 2 readings of the House and stalled. Support is needed to get passage before the House recesses for summer and reconvenes with new members next fall. Contact Speaker of the House, Rick Johnson, P.O. Box 30014, Lansing, MI 48909 or 517-373-1747 to express support of this bill.

David Held, commented on lack of parking at SOM library. Tammy Parsons also agreed and will contact Dept of Management & Budget regarding this issue.

April 11, 2002

The regular monthly meeting was called to order by President John Castle at 7:00 pm, 28 members and guests were present. Guests were Ken Smith and Pat Currigan. Our newest member, Janet Smith was introduced.

Greg James made motion to accept the March minutes as presented by secretary, Alice Raatz. Sam Pardee seconded. Approved.

Sam Pardee reported on today's MGC board meeting. The council is supporting a Michigan Military book written by Leroy Barnett of Archives by donating $5000.00 to assist in producing the book. More news will be forthcoming in May.
MGC requests each society furnish a list of speakers and topics that they may publish and share with each society.
Sam also reported that the Williamston "Basic Genealogy Course" was a huge success. 33 persons attended the 2 hour class. Sam supplied them with many basic forms and instructed on the use. Due to the success, Sam promised future classes would be scheduled.
Treasurer, Marge James, will be absent for the May meeting. Any unpaid bills will be held for the June meeting.
Trustees, Gloria Young and Norma Hass will audit the books next week.

Sam reports the following programs have been planned.

John reports Livingston County will host a seminar on April 27, 2002. Jean Crawford and Joyce Yeutter will work an ICGS table.

Greg James has completed the Ball Dunn CD. This CD contains 2,500 burials from the Ball Dunn Funeral Home during 1951-1986. Available now at $20, later will be $25. Greg presented a copy to Isabelle Wells for the reference room.
New computer is working just fine.

New Business, John announced the next executive board meetings will be May and August.

Alice Raatz, Historian, reports that Volume 3 of the ICGS history book complete to last month's meeting. As suggested in last month's meeting it will be passed around for all to browse.

Julie Carr donated a copy of the index of "Ingham County Bible and Family Records." Also, she is working on indexing the "Ingham County Democrat."

Hazel Vaughn shared a book on Irish Ancestors with our society.

Lynn Brown made a motion to adjourn so Sam Pardee could lead a group discussion on Genealogy Problem Solving. Gloria Young seconded. Approved.

March 14, 2002

The regular monthly meeting was called to order by President John Castle at 7:04 pm, 29 members and guests were present. Guests were Charles Hagler, Sue Voss, Ron Weesies, Pat Carrigan, and Julie Carr.

Meeting was suspended so the evening's program could be presented. Sam Pardee Introduced, Charles Hagler, of the State of Michigan Library. Charles gave a very interesting and informative talk, "What's in the Drawers?" which explained the microfiche contents of the many drawers at the library.

Meeting was resumed following a coffee break. John introduced, Ron Weesies, Vevay township supervisor, who requested a survey be completed by each member concerning what activities, facilities, and interests each person takes part in and what additional recreational plans should be included in Vevay Park.

The 50/50 drawing was held. Lynne Castle won $20 which she donated to ICGS general fund.

Lynne Castle reported that the Mason Library is planning a renovation of the current facility. President, John Castle wrote a letter to Susan Hill, of the Capitol Area District Library, to question whether or not our reference room would be affected by the proposed changes. Ms. Hill's reply seemed to indicate we would not be allotted space. This topic will be discussed at the March 20th executive board meeting. All are welcome to attend. Anyone wishing to express support for keeping a reference room at the library should send a letter to: Susan Hill, Capitol Area District Library, PO Box 40719, Lansing, MI 48901-7919.

Julie Carr of MMGS donated 5 books of obituary clippings from various Lansing-East Lansing newspapers. Of special mention was a book on East Lawn Cemetery Obits. Julie also donated the computer disc of these books, which Greg James will make available on our website. Julie will speak on "Newspapers" at an LDS Free seminar on May 11th.

Sue Voss of Dansville donated the book, "Dansville, When It Was A Boomtown," to our society. It was a written by a group of 6th graders as a class project.

Vice President, Sam Pardee reports that today's MGC meeting was very short due to absence of many committee members. Applications for the Lucy Mary Kellogg award are available if anyone knows of a society member who qualifies for this award. MGC workshop "How to grow your society" scheduled for April will be postponed until the fall.

Sam will give a lecture on "Beginning Genealogy" at Williamston library on April 10th.

Membership Secretary, Jean Crawford, reports we have 3 new members, making a total of 102. Jean is arranging for a vendor table at Livingston County in April 27th and Eaton County on June 1st. Anyone wishing to help, please contact Jean.
Jean has 10 orders for society shirts, but needs 2 more to place an order. Please consider placing an order. Sweatshirts $20 and t-shirts $10.

Treasurer, Marge James submitted a current financial report.

Librarian, Isabelle Wells, invites all to visit the reference room at the Mason Library. Hours are Tuesdays, noon to 4 pm and Saturdays, 11 am to 3 pm. Currently the reference room contains almost 1,000 items.

Member, Lynn Brown, donated 2 CD's to the society. The titles are "Early Settlers of New York" and "Early Settlers of Virgina."

New Business, John announced the next executive board meeting will be at 7 pm on March 20, 2002, at the Castle's home.

Greg James, computer, reports no problems with new computer.

Barbara Lyon Smith has volunteered for the next 3 months to relieve Joyce & Ray Yeutter of the social committee task of making coffee and cleaning up after each meeting.

Alice Raatz, Historian, the history book is up to date. The book is on display on the back table for any interested browsers. Barb Lyon Smith suggests that the book be passed around the tables next meeting to enable more persons to view it.

Barbara Lyon Smith, Newsletter, reports that the newsletter is available at tonight's meeting.

Lynne Castle reports that recently Ed Parker's wife was hospitalized after she suffered a stroke. Ed is the founder of ICGS.

February 14, 2002

The regular monthly meeting was called to order by President John Castle at 7:05 pm, 32 members and guests were present. Guests were Anne Marie O'Daniel, Dave Johnson, Jessica Parsons, and Cathy Morse.

The meeting was suspended so the evening's program could be presented. Sam Pardee introduced Dave Johnson of the State of Michigan Archives in Lansing. Dave gave a very interesting and informative talk and slide show on the holdings at the Archives.

After a 10 minute coffee break, John Castle reconvened the meeting. No 50/50 drawing tonight. Bruce Bevier made motion to accept the December 13th minutes as presented by secretary Alice Raatz. Norma Hass seconded. Approved.

President Castle has a request from Ron Weesies, Vevay Twsp Supervisor, to be allotted speaking time at our monthly meeting to present ideas on proposed recreational facilities for the township. Mr. Weesies will talk at our March meeting.

John announced that Shirley Hodges will give a talk in Vancouver Washington .
Also, Eaton Co Genealogical Society will host a workshop on June 1, 2002 and have given free vendor table space to our society.

The indexing of Onondaga and Lansing Township record books has begun. At the January meeting about 6 members volunteered to index books. Volunteers also were enlisted from MMGS. Most of those have been completed and returned to John. Many volumes yet to be indexed. Volunteers are needed. Microfilming may begin on the Onondaga records by March or April.

Membership Secretary, Jean Crawford, reports that 3 new members have joined our society. Current membership is 99.

Sam Pardee, reports that he will be conducting the following talks. February 6, 2002, "Beginning Genealogy" at the Lansing Library. April 10, 2002, "Beginning Genealogy" at the Williamston Library. April 11, 2002, "Sultana" at the Kiwanas in Lansing.

Librarian, Isabelle Wells informed us of a new addition to the Library reference room. Julie Carr donated a copy of compiled 1970-1990 obituaries.
Black Civil War soldier reenactment will be presented at various locations in and around Mason in February. Brochures available on the back table. February 28, Carol Collard will teach "Beginning Genealogy" at the Mason Library.


New Business, John announced the next executive board meeting will be held in March.
Eaton County Workshop will be held June 1, 2002 in Charlotte.


Greg James, reports that the computer continues to be working very well. Our new Web site is also working well. Greg encourages anyone with new ideas to contact him.
Ball Dunn Funeral Home CD is near completion and hopes to be available to sell at the Eaton County workshop in June.

Joyce Yeutter, Social committee expressed a need for a volunteer to prepare coffee and clean up at each meeting starting in April 2002. It was suggested that each volunteer take a 3 month period instead of serving for the entire year. Volunteers needed.

Alice Raatz, Historian, reports that Volume 2 of the ICGS History book is complete and has been given to Isabelle Wells for the Library reference room. Volume 2 covers the society activities for the period 1999-2000.

Barbara Lyon Smith, Newsletter reports that she is working on the next edition, which will be available by our March meeting. Deadline for contributing is within the next 2 weeks. Barbara suggests that members send queries to be included.

Sam Pardee, MGC delegate, reports on today's executive board meeting. MGC council will sponsor a class on April 6th on "How to Grow your Society".
Senate bill 794 to make birth records available at 100 years, instead of 110 has passed the Senate and also in the House committee.
County courthouse researchers equal rights issues continue to be discussed.

Lynne Castle reports that we have received our letter from the IRS that we have permanent tax exempt status.

Next regular meeting will be March 15, 2002. Guest speaker will be Carol Collard from the Library of Michigan, speaking on "Genealogy and the Internet" We will continue our "Beginning Genealogy" classes at 6:15 P.M. prior to the regular meeting.

January 10, 2002

The regular monthly meeting was called to order by President John Castle at 7:10 pm, 30 members and guests were present. Guests were Willeen Landgon, James Shellberg, Pat Corrigan, and Julie Carr.

Sally Landreville made motion to accept the December 13th minutes as presented by secretary Alice Raatz. Lynn Brown seconded.

Julie Carr of MMGS, talked about "Molecular Genealogy," a new project being planned by Brigham Young University. 200 volunteers are needed to provide a 4 generation pedigree chart and blood samples to be used for DNA matching. More information on the subject can be found in the May 2001 MMGS newsletter.

Vice President, Sam Pardee presented a notebook to Isabelle Wells for the Research room. The book contained the year 2000 "Stockbridge Town Crier" newspaper clippings compiled by Cynthia Grostik.

Sam announced that Shirley Hodges will give a talk about "Michigan and the Civil War" on Jan 16th at the Lansing Public Library. Sam will also be talking on "Basic Genealogy" Carol Collard will conduct class on "Genealogy and the Internet." Interested participant will need to pre-register by telephoning 517-367-6356. Sam also announced Livingston county will host a seminar on April 27th. Speaker will be Curt Witcher. April 6, 2002, there will be a seminar in Lansing for various society members. Topic will be about Local Genealogical Societies and ways it should serve their members.

Membership Secretary, Jean Crawford, reports that 17 members did not renew for the 2002 year. Current membership is 94. 14 new members joined our society in the past year. Jean is taking orders for ICGS T-shirts and Sweatshirts. A paper was circulated to obtain orders.

Librarian, Isabelle Wells, acknowledged the volunteers who donated their time in the reference room. Lynn Brown, John Castle, Lynne Castle, Joyce Darrow, Betty Jean Dean, Margie Griffin, Sally Landreville, Dewey Marlett, Andrea Miller, Nola Olson, Sam Pardee, Barbara Lyon Smith, Eldora Spooner, Valdeen Warren, and Joyce Yeutter. Isabelle is seeking an assistant librarian to help so that she may have the freedom to take an occasional vacation. Isabelle will begin a genealogy materials loan program. Books, audio/video tapes and CD's that have duplicates will be brought to the monthly meeting to be available to any member to sign out for a month. Ingham County Census records, 1850 through 1920, are available at the reference room.

New Business, John announced the next executive board meeting will be 7 pm on January 31, 2002, at the Castle's home.

Lynne Castle, reports that the IRS forms for our society tax exempt status were filed by 2001 year end. Recently, Lynne had an IRS request for additional information, which she promptly sent. She is now awaiting a response from the IRS.

John Castle, announced that we now have obtained all old records from Onondaga Township which includes voter registrations, mortgages, treasurers ledgers, clerks book, road commissioner, and WPA project of 1936. Also, Lansing Township and White Oak Township records have also been obtained. Many volunteers will be needed to index each volume prior to microfilming the books.

Greg James, reports that the computer has been installed and is working very well. Everyone is enjoying the new computer in the reference room.

Alice Raatz, Historian, showed the photos of the Christmas potluck dinner from the history book. All were invited to browse the history book, which contains all the minutes and events from the past year.

Barbara Lyon Smith, Newsletter reports that she is working on the next edition, which will be available in March.

Tammy Parsons, one of our Michigan Genealogical Council delegates, gave the following report on today's meeting.

Parking at the State of Michigan Library continues to be a problem. Forms are available at the front desk of the SOM Library to file your complaints.

Abrams genealogy lecture series will begin in February. Six lectures are planned for the coming year at $10 each or $50 for series. Also, a free lecture series will be available, but registration is a must. More info available online at

State of Michigan library has purchased all of the 1930 Federal Census. It is expected to be available on the shelves by summer.

Carol Callard spoke on the Stockbridge Newspaper Microfilms. The films are still in the cataloging process, but she will push for getting them on the shelves for the public as soon as possible.

Abrams Foundation is seeking financial support from all genealogical societies by requesting that each society submit a list of member's names/addresses for solicitations requests to all society members.

JoAnn Harvey received a letter from Secretary of State, Jennifer Granholm in response to her complaints regarding the manner in which genealogists are treated while attempting research in many county courthouses. Ms. Granholm made reference to the Freedom of Information Act , which states that all requests for information to a county courthouse should be treated the same. Hopefully, with this kind of support, county courthouse research will improve.

Senate Bill SB974, introduced by Senator Diane Byrum and Senator Schwartz has passed the Senate and on to the House of Representatives. This bill will allow death records to be available to public at 100 years instead of 110 years. Contact your State Representative to support this bill for passage in the House.

After 10 minute coffee break, the 50/50 drawing was held. Lorraine Larkin won $16.50 and donated $10 to ICGS general fund.

Sam Pardee conducted a general discussion on "Genealogy, what are your problems?" Members and guests shared their experiences on county courthouse research, underground railroad houses in the area, land records, and availability of records in courthouses.

Dave Johnson will speak on "Genealogical Holdings at the State Library" at our next meeting on Thursday, February 14, 2002.
